Great Southern Nights is a state-wide live music initiative that celebrates Australian artists, venues, and communities through hundreds of performances across NSW.

As a photographer across the 2025 and 2026 programs, I documented a diverse range of artists, audiences, and venues, creating imagery that captured the energy and atmosphere of live music experiences across the state. My approach focused on storytelling through authentic moments and audience connection. By working closely within the crowd and responding to the unique energy of each performance, I created a body of work that reflects the individuality of every show while contributing to a cohesive visual narrative for the Great Southern Nights campaign, and Australian music archive.

The Challenge: Document live music events, creating imagery that captured not only the performing artists but also the energy, atmosphere, and community.

The brief prioritised audience engagement and event atmosphere, requiring a strong focus on storytelling through candid moments, and crowd interaction.

The Solution: I approached each event with a documentary mindset, embedding myself within the crowd to capture authentic moments as they unfolded. While the artists remained a key part of the story, the primary focus was on the connection between performers and audiences. The shared experiences, reactions, and atmosphere that make live music memorable.

By balancing dynamic crowd imagery, artist portraits, and environmental details, I created a collection of photographs and videos that reflected the individuality of each event, while maintaining consistency across the broader Great Southern Nights campaign.

No two shows were the same, and the resulting imagery celebrates the diverse communities, venues, and live music experiences that define the program.
